SANTA ANA – Mater Dei hosted six games on Saturday at the Matt Denning Nike Hoops Classic, one of the premier regular-season one-day basketball tournaments on the West Coast.

It consisted of five girls ‘basketball games, including the Monarchs, and one Mater Dei boys’ basketball game. Here’s a look at the action:

Match 1: Aliso Niguel 52, Esperanza 49

Led by the heroism of F Shanna Brown, the Wolverines have avenged a 24-point loss since the start of the season to defeat the Esperanza 52-49. Brown lost 28 points and 21 rebounds for Aliso. Aryanna Hudson finished with 10 points and five assists, and Katie Dunakin added six points and 10 rebounds.

GAME 2: Corona Centennial 66, Mission Hills 61

The Huskies showed the poise of a defending champion in a game of punches and kickbacks to defeat Mission Hills 66-61. Centennial finished the second quarter in a run to lead 37-24 at halftime, but Mission Hills won the third quarter 19-9, including an 11-0 run, to cut the deficit to three before the final quarter . Still, the Huskies regained control of the game and never gave up on the lead, and Londynn Jones’ 27 points proved insurmountable for the Grizzlies.



THU 3: Catholic Cathedral 81, Christian Ontario 44

Speaking of the defending section champions, Cathedral Catholic put on an exceptional show of ball movement and shooting in a 37-point rout of Ontario Christian. UConn 5 Star engages Absolutely Outstanding Ice Brady, scoring 31 points and 24 rebounds. Izzy Navarro flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 11 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Gizmo Navarro also scored 15 points and Taryn Johnson also finished in double digits. The Dons led by just one possession after the first quarter, but ended the game 66-31.

Despite the tough loss on an unusually tough shooting night, the previously undefeated Knights played Cathedral in the first quarter and proved themselves to be some of the most renowned programs. Shayla Gilmer had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Chloe Briggs added 13 points.



THU 4: La Jolla Country Day 73, Sierra Canyon 71

La Jolla Country Day proved victorious in an exciting clash between two consensual teams among the top three in the state. 5-star C Breya Cunningham led the LJCD with 24 points (9-16 FG), 15 rebounds and four blocks in a game filled with offensive fireworks. 4-star G and UCLA pledge Jada Williams scored 18 points on 7-11 shots for the Torreys, Sumayah Sugapong scored 14 points (6-10 FG), five rebounds and three assists, and Tajianna Roberts added 13 points.

Crystal Wang led Sierra Canyon with 19 points (9-15 FG) to go with seven rebounds, Leia Edwards scored 16 points on 6-10 shots, Mackenly Randolph finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Izela Arenas added 12 points . The LJCD caused 5-star G Juju Watkins fouling issues and forced her to a 2-19 shooting night, but Watkins still contributed 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and three blocks in less than 24 minutes.



GAME 5: Mater Dei (girls) 75, Sage Hill 40

Mater Dei claimed a 75-40 victory over Sage Hill on Saturday in an entertaining offensive showcase as host of the Matt Denning Nike Hoops Classic.

Emily Shaw scored 19 points on 7-10 shots (5-7 of three) in 14 minutes off the bench, and Caia Elisaldez finished with 13 points, four rebounds and a team high of five assists and four steals. Jenessa Cotton also had a double-double and five other Monarchs finished with at least five points. MD shot 55.6% from the field and from the depths, and 17 of his 30 field goals were assisted.

Emily Eadie played all 32 minutes for the Lightning and led them with 19 points (3-4 of three), nine rebounds and two assists (tied). Kat RIgheimer added 12 points and seven boards for Sage Hill. Like Ontario Christian earlier, Sage received a pretty lopsided beating, but still seemed to be on the big stage.

GAME 6: Mater Dei (boys) 72, San Juan Hills 59

In the lone boys game of the day, Mater Dei came out strong and maintained a comfortable double-digit wire-to-wire to defeat San Juan Hills 72-59. F Zack Davidson was unstoppable, leading the game on points (25 of 9-14 shots), rebounds (eight), blocks (one – tied) and steals (three – tied). Great freshman Tee Bartlett added 15 points to combine for 40 on the massive Monarchs starting area. Mater Dei’s shot did most of its damage in the paint and shot 27-48 (56.3%) from the field.

San Juan Hills was never really in the game, but was able to play very closely against the Monarchs for most of the stretches. Jacob Simon (19 points on 7-10 shots) and Mark Reichner (18 points) led SJH in scoring, and John McFadden added nine points, seven rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal. Despite a huge size disadvantage, San Juan Hills was able to nearly neutralize Mater Dei on the boards (26-25) while forcing a 4-17 night shot from three. Yet no amount of paint could stop the Monarchs from scoring in the lane.
