  • Big brands like Nike, Disney and Gucci are experimenting with the “metaverse”.
  • They are hiring for positions in marketing, design and engineering right now.
  • Here is what currently exists.

Job postings pop up with tech’s favorite new buzzword: metaverse.

What is the Metaverse? Different companies have tried to apply their own definitions, but the general idea is a persistent virtual world in which 3D and virtual reality technologies will play a major role.

The term has been around for decades, but was popularized and co-opted by Facebook, which renamed Meta in October 2021 to signal its intentions to grow the metaverse. It’s “the next version of the internet,” Andy Wilkinson, Meta’s recruiting director for Europe, Middle East and Africa, told Insider in a previous interview.

Meta goes all out, with 103 Metaverse-specific job postings on its careers site right now. He also announced that he would hire 10,000 people in Europe over the next five years for metaverse roles.

Grayscale, a cryptocurrency asset manager, upwardly estimates the Metaverse to be a $1 trillion annual revenue opportunity across ads, digital assets, and events. And where is the potential to earn money, there are jobs.

Big brands ranging from big tech giants like Microsoft, Roblox, and AWS are hiring for technical roles around building metaverse technologies and infrastructure. Roblox, the popular gaming world, appends the term metaverse to every job posting. Other brands such as Disney, Gucci, and Nike are hiring experimental metaverse roles related to media and content.
